Bioidentical Hormone Treatment

Bioidentical hormone treatment provides hormone supplements that are biochemically identical to the hormones produced by the human body. This fact offers important therapeutic advantages and minimizes potential risks.

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy

Bioidentical hormones are initially prepared as powders coming from a natural base. The hormones are prepared by pharmaceutical companies then sent to a compounding pharmacy where they are formulated according to doctors' prescriptions.

Most bioidentical hormones are derived from soy or yam and some companies have been around for over 70 years manufacturing bioidentical hormones.

Oral bioidentical hormone supplements go directly to the liver, which converts into a different hormone. The preferred method of supplementing bioidentical hormones is transdermal. This treatment is delivered in the form of creams, gels, and suppositories. This way, the hormones are absorbed directly into the bloodstream.

Why bioidentical hormones?

Most people are unaware of the importance of balancing hormones for health and well-being.

Taking the approach of balancing hormones allows you to deal with the root cause of health problems. For example, taking Motrin for menstrual cramps may relieve the pain, but giving her the correct natural hormone prevents the cramps from occurring in the first place.

There are a wide range of health issues that attribute to hormone imbalance such as menopause, diabetes, asthma, arthritis, obesity, cancer, migraine headaches, fibroids, ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), and endometriosis.

Hormones effect every cell in the human body and have the ability to make you ill or improve your health.

It may be surprising to some readers that many doctors have almost no knowledge of natural hormone replacement. What doctors learn in college is based on research done by pharmaceutical companies. Drug companies can't patent natural products and therefore aren't interested in spending hundreds of millions of dollars evaluating the natural hormone therapy and balancing hormones via bioidentical hormone treatment.

Most endocrinologists who specialize in hormones are more familiar with synthetic hormones because this is what drug companies recommend.

What exactly is "bioidentical"?

The term "bioidentical" simply means the entire hormone is molecularly identical to the hormone produced by the human body. Hormones used in bioidentical hormone treatment come from soy or yam. Compounding pharmacies dispense compounded bioidentical medications.

Perhaps the most controversial area of medicine today is hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Only recently have women started to question the use of synthetic hormones and estrogen replacement. Now, more than ever before, women are being advised to discuss their individual needs with their health care professional.

However, many physicians aren't well informed about hormone replacement therapy, especially estrogen replacement therapy (ERT). Estrogen can cause aggressive cancers, strokes, heart attacks, and more.

In many ways estrogen is toxic to the human body. Progesterone, another important hormone, basically protects the body from negative effects of estrogen. You can think of progesterone as the anti-estrogen hormone. The effects of progesterone help menopausal women regain hormonal balance.

Estrogen damages blood vessels. This is why it causes migraine headaches.

Estrogen causes six different cancers in women including breast cancer, ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, vaginal cancer, and cancer of the colon.

Estrogen has been used to help osteoporosis prevention. However, it appears that in some studies estrogen may prevent osteoporosis temporarily and there hasn't yet been studies that show it reverses osteoporosis.

Balancing hormones for physical health

Hormones regulate every aspect of health and women are becoming more aware of bioidentical hormone treatment.

For the various hormones our body produces, there are thousands of receptor sites distributed all over the body. It shouldn't be that surprising that balancing hormones has the power to alter the body's behavior in profound ways.
