Compounding Pharmacy
A compounding pharmacy is a type of pharmacy where a pharmacist or physician mixes drugs creating a prescription necessary to fit the unique needs of a patient. This may be necessary for medical reasons such as to change the form of the medication from a solid pill to a liquid, to avoid a non-essential ingredient that the patient is allergic to, or to obtain the exact dose needed. It may also be done for voluntary reasons, such as adding favorite flavors to a medication. History of CompoundingCompounding of medication means making a prescription specifically for each individual patient to meet their unique needs.Before the rein of the big drug companies, pharmacists made most medicine this way from ingredients in the pharmacist’s laboratories. In 1930, 75% of all medications were compounded. Then the big drug companies began to grow in laboratory sophistication and economic power, and pre-made medicines became the standard. However, the standard medicines do not always meet the needs of every patient.  The number of people that have unique health needs is growing every day. For these unique people, off-the-shelf prescription medicines don't meet their needs.
Compounded medications that are a customized prescription or ordered by licensed physicians are mixed safely by trained licensed compounding pharmacists. Veterinarians even use compounding solutions. There has gradually been a greater demand for treating animals using compounding because of the relatively narrow selection of medicines that are manufactured by pharmaceutical companies.
