PMS Symptoms

Lifestyle changes and medications to help relieve PMS

PMS symptoms exist and there’s no doubt it can make a week out of every month miserable for everyone involved. Women often report a tidal wave of symptoms at the onset and dread the approach of each premenstrual time of the month.

Diet and exercise will help with PMS symptoms, but at the root of the problem is hormone imbalance and this is the issue that should be addressed. Progesterone has been the hormone wrongly accused because it’s usually the one that’s high just before menstruation.

The fact is, progesterone is actually lower than normal at that time during a woman's cycle, where progesterone is supposed to be dominant, and estrogen is dominant instead.

Common Health Problems Associated with PMS

There are two important realities to consider…

1. PMS is real.
2. No, you aren’t crazy.

The following are the most common PMS symptoms women regularly complain about…
  • Bloating

  • Weight gain

  • Headache

  • Back aches

  • Irritability

  • Depression

  • Breast swelling

  • Loss of libido

  • Fatigue

Do any of these symptoms sound familiar to you? These are also symptoms of estrogen dominance.

Diagnosis of PMS rests on the range and monthly timing of symptoms. The hormone connection is very intriguing as PMS is obviously linked to the monthly hormone cycle.

Treatment of PMS

Possible treatments include diuretics, tranquilizers, dietary changes, aerobic exercise, herbs, thyroid supplements, psychiatric counseling, and vitamin and mineral supplementation. While each could provide some relief, none are a proven cure-all.

Natural Progesterone Cream

Estrogen is the dominant sex hormone during the first week after menstruation. With ovulation, progesterone levels rise to assume dominance during the two weeks preceding menstruation.

Deficiency of progesterone and a surplus of estrogen during these two weeks results in an abnormal month long exposure to estrogen dominance. This sets the stage for estrogen side effects.

Progesterone blocks many of estrogen’s potential side effects.

Natural progesterone cream is becoming more common for treating PMS. Natural progesterone cream has improved symptoms as well as the elimination of premenstrual water retention and weight gain.

It’s important to note that not all PMS symptoms are caused by progesterone deficiency. Fatigue, headaches and loss of libido caused by hypothyroidism or low thyroid function can simulate PMS.

Estrogen dominance impairs thyroid hormone activity and will simulate hypothyroidism.

Other Factors Causing PMS

Your nutrition is important because fiber helps bind the estrogen and hold it for elimination. A lack of fiber in your diet can cause the estrogen to be recycled or reabsorbed.

Eating too much red meat can unnaturally cause estrogen levels to increase. Exposure to xenoestrogens may also play a role in hormone imbalance.
