Progesterone in Pregnancy
Progesterone Levels Effect on Pregnancy
Progesterone in pregnancy is important for balancing hormones and the levels of progesterone effects fatigue, heatburn, health of your baby, and prevention of
pregnancy complications such as miscarriage.
Pregnancy Triggering Progesterone Production
Morning sickness is the combination of nausea and vomiting that so many women experience during pregnancy. To one degree or another, it is
most likely caused by the rise in several hormones. Human chorionic gonadotropin is the main hormone that's triggered. HCG is vital for the
first trimester because it triggers the production of progesterone.
Thyroid During Pregnancy
At least 5 hormones affect your thyroid during pregnancy and postpartum. How these hormones interact in your body will determine their impact
on your pregnancy. The rising rates of low thyroid disease have provided some of the most compelling links between environmental hormone disruptors and human illness.
Progesterone helps regulate your immune response, reducing the risk of forming abnormal antibodies that can harm your baby. After your delivery,
as your progesterone levels fall, you may develop a temporary boost of antithyroid antibodies, a cause of postpartum thyroiditis.
Postpartum thyroiditis is an autoimmune reaction against your thyroid. During your pregnancy, the placenta was driving your thyroid function
to rev your metabolism. This increase in metabolism is what helped offset the fatiguing effects of progesterone. These changes in your immune system put you at risk for developing postpartum thyroiditis.
Serum Progesterone Test
As soon as you know you're pregnant, you should begin early testing to make sure general health screening tests are up to date.
A serum progesterone test is one of five tests that should be done to help prevent and predict early complications like miscarriage.
Serum progesterone measures the amount of progesterone produced by your ovaries to support your pregnancy. If your level is less than
20 nanograms/milliliter, several studies suggest that taking a progesterone supplement can help reduce the risk of miscarriage.
Women with Epilepsy
The drop in estrogen associated with menstruation can trigger seizures. About 1 in 200 pregnancies are complicated by epilepsy.
It is widely believed that epilepsy medications increase the risk of birth defects. Also, if seizures aren't controlled, a woman's chance of dying in pregnancy
is 10 times greater.
The high estrogen levels associated with pregnancy could also increase her risk of having a seizure. However, progesterone has very potent
anti-seizure properties, so maintaining hormone balance or leaning towards higher progesterone
in pregnancy may help prevent seizures.
