Thyroid Supplements
Vitamins and minerals crucial to optimal thyroid function
Thyroid supplements and higher-quality vitamins are found at health food and vitamin stores. Most nationally advertised
multiple vitamins sold in drug stores
don't have the potency needed for thyroid sufferers. Sometimes the highest quality supplements are those you order
directly form a top supplement company.
Importance of vitamins
Vitamins are important for your health because your body's cells are subject to highly reactive and unstable molecules known as free radicals. Free radicals
are harmful by-products of normal cellular metabolism.
Research has shown that much of the biological damage and disease is related to the harm caused by free radicals.
Oxidative stress
Free radicals cause oxidative stress. This stress causes cell damage and cell death.
Antioxidant compounds are helpful to clearing damaging chemical oxidants by protecting biomolecules from the oxidative damage.
Some thyroid vitamins act as antioxidants by eliminating free radicals. Higher intakes of nutrient antioxidants are associated with lower levels
of chronic, degenerative diseases.
Antioxidants and your thyroid
Antioxidants are an important part of your thyroid diet because antioxidants help reduce free radicals. This reduction in free radicals reduces the pressure on the immune
system and detoxification system.
Vitamin A
Vitamin A is known for its antioxidant properties.
Daily doses of Vitamin A for low thyroid sufferers should be between 10,000 and 20,000 international units (IU). This amount is
commonly found in good multivitamins.
It's important to mention that Vitamin A is one of the few vitamins that can become toxic in high doses.
Never take more than 25,000 IU daily.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is another vitamin that has good antioxidant properties. It's usually recommended to consume at least 1,000 mg of vitamin C a day.
Since most multivitamins don't contain this amount, it might be a good idea to also take a
separate vitamin C tablet along with your multivitamin.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E is another great antioxidant. Vitamin E should generally be taken in doses of 400 IU daily. However, if you are experiencing menopause symptoms such as
hot flashes, you may increase to 800 or 1,200 daily for excellent non-estrogen control
of this uncomfortable symptom.
B-complex
You might adjust your intake of B-complex to about 50 mg a day. Specifically, you might adjust vitamin B6 to about 100 mg a day.
Bioflavonoids
Bioflavonoids are the water soluble, brightly colored substances that often appear in fruits and vegetables as companions to vitamin C. The components
citrin, hesperidin, rutin, flavones, and flavonals are protective and helpful as antioxidants and vitamins.
Autoimmune thyroiditis
Bioflavonoids help ease the inflammation for people that suffer from autoimmune thyroiditis.
Minerals for healthy thyroid function
For healthy thyroid function, minerals may actually be more important than vitamins.
Copper, zinc, and selenium are especially important for thyroid function.
Chromium, manganese, calcium, and magnesium are essential minerals for thyroid health.
Sea vegetables
You can get most minerals in your diet by consuming more sea vegetables. The Japanese routinely eat arame, dulse, wakame, hijiki, nori, and kombu.
Thyroid supplements are important, but be sure to obtain as many of your nutrients as possible from whole food sources.
