Thyroid Vitamins

Supplements for supporting the thyroid

Thyroid vitamins that contain ingredients rich in trace minerals and iodine help support proper thyroid gland function.

Key causes of hypothyroidism

Some of the key causes of hypothyroidism (under active thyroid) include...
  • Pesticide residues on fruit

  • Radiation from x-rays

  • Drugs

  • Consumption of saturated fats

  • Chemicals in food

  • Fluoride in the water

  • Poor diet

  • Alcohol

Vitamins to improve thyroid function

Vitamins B and C, zinc, copper and amino acid tyrosine are essential for healthy thyroid function.

For optimal thyroid health and function, a high quality multivitamin with minerals and Vitamin C is recommended each day.

If you have symptoms of low thyroid, you may be able to improve thyroid function by consuming more vitamins. There are many thyroid vitamins that claim to help your thyroid.

Most of them contain the following...
  • Iodine
Iodine is important to support thyroid function. Most people usually get enough iodine from food and multi vitamin-mineral supplements.

  • Vitamin E
Vitamin E facilitates selenium metabolism and is therefore critical for normal thyroid function. Vitamin E assists in the absorption of Iodine.

  • Selenium
Deficiencies of selenium may impair thyroid function and promote hypothyroidism.

  • Forskolin
Forskolin increases thyroid hormone production as well as stimulates thyroid hormone release. Forskolin is commonly used to raise levels of cyclic AMP. Cyclic AMP is essential to synthesize and regulate thyroid hormones, growth hormones, cortisol, DHEA, testosterone, melatonin, and other hormones.

  • Ferulic Acid
Ferulic Acid/Gamma Oryzanol has anti-ulcer, anabolic, anti-stress, thyroid-stimulating and hormonal properties. It also can reduce the incidence of hot flashes.

  • Gamma Oryzanol
Gamma oryzanol is a naturally occurring mixture of plant chemicals called sterols and ferulic acid esters.

Some evidence suggests that gamma oryzanol increases testosterone levels, stimulates the release of endorphins (pain-relieving substances made in the body), and promotes the growth of lean muscle tissue.

Gamma oryzanol has been used to treat medical conditions, including heart burn, nausea, vomiting, underactive thyroid, physical injuries, and muscular aches and pains.

Supplements for thyroid support vs. hormone treatment

There are many natural non-prescription thyroid supplements out there that claim to boost thyroid function or treat hypothyroidism.

Patients need to be cautious about these when considering adding them to their bioidentical hormone treatment. Some may actually affect their treatment negatively.

If you're still unclear about what thyroid vitamins to take to improve thyroid function, talk to your health care provider.
