What is Menopause?

What is menopause?

Before discussing what menopause is, you should first think about the following questions.

If the definition of menopause is, "the time after you stop having periods", why are you having hot flashes while you are still having periods?

What if you have had a hysterectomy? Does that count as menopause?

What if you aren't experiencing menopause symptoms and your doctor puts you on hormones and you continue to have periods?

Stages of Menopause

Exactly what is menopause?

There are 2 main stages of menopause. During perimenopause, your hormones are winding down, fluctuating, and often creating symptoms that we commonly think of as menopause. These menopause symptoms aren't real symptoms of menopause and go away in a few years.

Then there is the permanent "pause" of your menses. This is your last period and officially menopause. Menopause actually only lasts a few days. The aftermath of menopause is when you are experiencing menopause symptoms.

Everything afterward is post-menopause. Since the time after your period stops is commonly referred to as "menopause" (even though it's technically postmenopause), the term "menopause" used on this site will refer to this time period of experiencing menopause symptoms to help with ambiguity.

Menopause is confusing for most women because they confuse the symptoms of perimenopause. The fact is, women shouldn't worry so much because the difficult confusing symptoms won't last the rest of their life which is what many women fear.

Facts on Menopause

Menopause is virtually unknown in agrarian cultures. In native cultures, menopause tends to be a cause for a quiet celebration. If asked the question, "What is menopause?", you'd get quite a different answer. Menopause is seen as a time when the woman is moving into a deeper level of self-discovery and spiritual awareness. When a woman reaches menopause, she has completed her child bearing years and is becoming a wise older woman.

In these cultures, women are revered and looked up to for advice. The women's opinion in these cultures is heavily important in the decision making process of the community.

In the West, it is rarely acknowledged or understood that these changes caused by menopause give a woman a sharper eye for inequity and injustice, and a voice that insists on speaking up about them. This change in a women's midlife fuels creative desires and subliminal desires with volcanic energy that demands an outlet.
